Australian Languages Workshop - Minjerribah (Stradbroke Is.) Feb-Mar 2020
Living Languages attended the Australian Languages Workshop 28 February - 1 March, held on Minjerribah (Stradbroke Island) on Quandamooka Country. Living Languages trainer, Ebony, presented at the conference with Fred and Aneta – two Wakka Wakka language activists who attended our Paper & Talk workshop last year at AIATSIS. The presentation, “Paper to talk: Bringing Wakka Wakka home from the archive”, centred around Fred and Aneta’s experiences at the workshop, and how they have been using the Wakka Wakka materials they uncovered in the archives to support their language work back home. Both are doing incredible work to keep language and culture strong in their communities, and it was great to see them sharing their stories with other language activists. We were also so privileged to see long time friends and participants of Living Languages Sandra (Jandai) and Aaron (Pitta Pitta) presenting at the conference and speaking their languages in front of a rapt audience. Thanks to the ALW organisers for inviting us to present, and to ILA for supporting us to attend!
