Fitzroy Crossing Workshop Nov 2018

The 13-15 of November saw Trainer Ebony Joachim along with guest co-trainers Hiroko Shioji and Coco Yu (Yawuru teachers from Nyamba Buru Yawuru, in Broome) in Fitzroy Crossing, WA. The three days focussed on language learning and teaching - with Bunuba, Gooniyandi and Walmajarri speakers with various work backgrounds joining us for the workshop. The group enjoyed getting to learn and share new skills with one another. Having participants from different language groups – some participants from Halls Creek and trainers from Broome – networking was one of the things participants really enjoyed. We had presentations done by Hiroko and Coco, and also by one of the participants, Valma, a worker from the Kimberley Language Resource Centre. They all shared the with the group the language work they have been doing on their countries. This workshop had language learners working with Elders and strong speakers to learn more. The intergenerational transfer of knowledge is always a highlight of our workshops and it was very apparent in Fitzroy Crossing.

The Fitzroy Crossing workshop was very symbolic for Living Languages/RNLD as an organisation. From being participants together in our past Professional Development workshops, Ebony and Hiroko are now delivering RNLD workshops together as trainers: the first ever workshop to be run by previous participants of our training. This workshop also had the first all Aboriginal training team (and training participants of course) in years, if not ever. We hope there are more like this to come!

We would like to thank Hiroko Shioji and Coco Yu for joining us as guest trainers on this workshop and thank you to the Kimberly Language Resource Centre for inviting Living Languages/RNLD along to Fitzroy Crossing.
