Broome Workshop Oct 2019
Amy and our old friend and occasional trainer, Jess, travelled out to Broome over 23-25 October to run a workshop at the fabulous Mabu Yawuru Ngan-ga language centre – home of regional trainer Roko Shioji. After the centre’s hugely successful Walalangga Yawuru Ngan-ga Yawuru immersion program in 2017-18, this workshop was all about sharing skills and knowledge with the wider region, with participants from Yawuru, Nyikina, Mangala, Yulaparija and Walmajarri language communities.
All participants were either currently, or soon to be, teaching language in their communities, so the workshop focused on teaching methods and resources, as well as skills and knowledge to unlock more of the complex linguistic information in their resources.
Jess and Amy were very lucky to be able to take a break from training and become participants for much of the workshop, as Roko and the Yawuru staff shared their experiences, methods and resources from their immersion program, and some of the teachers in the room shared their own methods and resources with the group. It was such a pleasure to be back in this beautiful part of the world training alongside Roko, and we can’t wait to share what we’ve learnt with other groups around Australia.
